CP Rail

  • While at Hatch 3 years ago I was brought in to work on a project for the Canadian Pacific rail which i had to build a working prototype in two weeks.

Hatch is a project consulting organization specializing in the mining industry and they also have a very large digital team.

    • Rail flaw and track geometry testing are not always performed on a regular basis, and in some cases, not at all.

    • CP had 8000 crossings across canada which needed to be assessed & there are field teams for each crossing.

    • The current process was very manual and they had more than 80 excel sheets to track and record data being collected.

    • The overall goal was to help CP make all their non-compliant crossings compliant with ease and within the Government deadline.

    • My task was to create a digital experience for their roadmasters helping them collect data for 8000 crossings across Canada.

  • I kicked off the project by conducting a quick discovery workshop with the product manager to understand why, who? What and how.

    • Based on this data I quickly deep dived into secondary research and saw why this was a problem as I had no domain knowledge around it.

    • I also conducted discovery sessions with the client to also get a better understanding of the problem and also create alignment on if I was solving the right problems for them.

    • Based on the qualitative data from the customer and secondary research I created a proto persona, generated quick user stories and user flows, conducted internal usability testing and external validated them with the engineers and crafted the high fidelity wireframes and style guide and handed off to our dev team

  • I was able to complete the work and assets within 2 weeks and this helped us close the contract with CP rail for 250K

    • CP rail was able to meet their government deadline before the end of the year

    • And in the next 12 months we were able to close work worth 2mil for Hatch which included an internal office management application to help them audit their crossing data

I'm really proud of the work that i did there because i was able to focus on the customer, deliver value quickly and earn their trust which helped CP rail bring more business to Hatch as a result.
